Hello, and welcome to the "my corner of the neighborhood"...

Hello there, my name is Bill Bauer.

Thanks for stopping by... we always appreciate polite visitors.

I have a varied and politically incorrect background. I graduated from public high school in Maryland in 1981; went briefly to the University of Maryland, where a slight altercation with authority involving my swordfighting habits and friends removed me from consideration as a student. I then drifted for several years attending other colleges (Ft. Howard, Maryland; St. Petersburg, Florida; Rexburg, Idaho and back to College Park, Maryland) before joining the US Army in 1986.

After basic training and medical training, I was sent to Wertheim, Germany (Peden Barracks) as the medic for a MLRS artillery battery (Alpha Battery, 4/27th) for over 3 years, at which time I reenlisted (silly me). I came back to the States, did advanced medical training plus BNCOC and from there went to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the home of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) as the senior medic for an infantry company (Bravo Company, 3/187th - Rakkasan!). My career came to an abrupt halt after my leg was injured during the (first) Gulf War. I accepted a discharge, and went my way to try life in the civilian sector.

After the usual security job (Indianapolis, Indiana) to give my leg time to heal, I moved back to the Washington, DC area for family reasons... first, in a bio-type job, then came my break - a new kind of company called an "ISP" (this was the mid-90's, after all) was looking for someone good at computer-think (my parents were in that business, and I grew up with the old machines), and invited me to join... turned out I was still pretty good at thinking that way, and so stayed in the Internet business - first as a telecom technician, then a routing engineer, and then as I got better, I got into the network security arena. I started by specializing in firewalls and IDS systems; then stayed in incident response for several years... I am currently contracting for the government as a subject matter expert and program manager in network security architecture, incident response, and operations.

Along the way, I met and fell in love with a fantastic lady - Amy. In August 1996, she finally succumbed to my blandishments and became my wife. She enjoys many of the same hobbies and tastes that I do, and enjoys our life of puttering around with our home network, fixing other people's networks, being with my kids when we can (Carol, 22, and David, 19) and learning and growing together. I still teach swordplay to those who ask, and help those in medieval recreation and stage groups learn how not to get nailed in the first 5 minutes...

Here is my resume; for further information, please don't hesitate to email me.

My traditional list of "likes and links": the Florida Keys, redheads, Russian vodka, classic rock and roll, old cars (all of them, but specifically old air-cooled VW's; my last being a '73 Westfalia CamperBus), long drives through the country, Nagel portraits, medieval recreation, Internet surfing, strategic and role-playing gaming, shooting , lacrosse, and many other things that do not immediately come to mind.
